Saint Days: John Wycliffe
John Wycliffe (1320-1384) was a priest in the Church of England and seminary professor at Oxford.
During his life, he was quite the controversialist, arguing staunchly against many facets of Roman Catholicism.
Perhaps the most important contribution he made, however, was his translation of the Bible into the common vernacular of his day.
One of his most renowned quotes rings true for us today:
"I believe that in the end, the truth will conquer."
Let us offer our prayers in memory of Wycliffe:
Almighty God, by your Holy Spirit you have made us one with your saints in heaven and on earth: Grant that in our earthly pilgrimage we may always be supported by this fellowship of love and prayer, and know ourselves to be surrounded by their witness to your power and mercy. We ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ, in whom all our intercessions are acceptable through the Spirit, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.
