Saint Days: Saint Anthony the Great
Saint Anthony (251-356) was one of the first Desert Fathers and a vital, early contributor to Christian monasticism. He was one of the first monks to move into the wilderness. St. Athanasius' biography of St. Anthony tells us that while in the wilderness, he overcame great temptations from the devil through prayer, serving as a model for us all.
He is credited as saying:
"If we make every effort to avoid death of the body, still more should it be our endeavor to avoid death of the soul. There is no obstacle for a man who wants to be saved other than negligence and laziness of the soul."
Let us pray in the memory of Saint Anthony the Great:
O God, whose blessed Son became poor that we through his poverty might be rich: Deliver us from an inordinate love of this world, that we, inspired by the devotion of your servant St. Anthony, may serve you with singleness of heart, and attain to the riches of the age to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
