Saint Days: Samuel Shoemaker, Priest and Renewer of Society
Samuel Shoemaker (1893-1963) was an Episcopal Priest at Calvary Episcopal Church in New York City and later in Pittsburgh. His sermons were syndicated over radio networks for decades and he was renown for being a fantastic preacher.
He also worked with the Oxford Group, an organization whose chief aim was ecumenical work to create "a new world order for Christ." Out of this group, Alcoholic's Anonymous was formed which Shoemaker was a significant contributor to.
Let us remember the example of Samuel Shoemaker as we pray:
Almighty and everlasting God, who rekindled the flame of your love in the heart of your servant Samuel Shoemaker to manifest your compassion and mercy on the poor and the persecuted; Grant to us, your humble servants, a like faith and power of love, that we who give thanks for his righteous zeal may profit by his example through Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
