Saint Days: Martin Luther King Jr, Renewer of Society
Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) was a Baptist minister and civil rights advocate who utilized nonviolent civil disobedience as a resistance to American systemic racism and segregation. In 1955, he organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Perhaps his most memorable moment was the "I Have a Dream" speech delivered in 1963's March on Washington.
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
Let us remember Martin Luther King Jr. today in our prayers:
Almighty and everlasting God, who kindled the flame of your love in the heart of your servant Martin Luther King Jr. to manifest your compassion and mercy on the poor and the persecuted; Grant to us, your humble servants, a like faith and power of love, that we who give thanks for his righteous zeal may profit by his example; through Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
