Saint Days: Bede The Venerable, Priest and Monk

St. Bede (c. 673-735) was an English priest, monk, and historian who is recognized as one of the Doctors of the Church. He wrote a very important book for Anglicans titled Ecclesiastical History of the English People, causing him to be recognized as "The Father of English History." He also translated many of the early Church Fathers from Greek and Latin so that they could be understood by his contemporaries in England.

The Venerable Bede summarizes his own life by stating:

I have devoted my energies to the study of the scriptures, observing monastic discipline, and singing the daily services in church; study, teaching, and writing have always been my delight.

Let us remember Bede in our prayers today:

O God, whose blessed Son became poor that we through his poverty might be rich: Deliver us from an inordinate love of this world, that we, inspired by the devotion of your servant St. Bede, may serve you with singleness of heart, and attain to the riches of the age to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
