Saint Days: Evelyn Underhill, Teacher of the Faith
Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941) was an Anglo-Catholic novelist, poet, and writer. She was drawn to mysticism and pacifism. She was married in 1907. She and her husband never had children and she spent much of her time traveling in Europe to explore art and Catholicism. She was drawn to the Catholic church but her husband, a Protestant, actively discouraged her from pursuing it.
She wrote over 30 books in her life. Some under her maiden name and others under the pseudonym John Cordelier. She was a prominent spiritual director and retreat leader.
She reminds us, "All things are perceived in the light of charity, and hence under the aspect of beauty; for beauty is simply reality seen with the eyes of love."
Let us remember Evelyn Underhill in our prayers:
Almighty God, you gave to your servant Evelyn Underhill special gifts of grace to understand and teach the truth as it is in Christ Jesus: Grant that by this teaching we may know you, the one true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
