Saint Days: William Grant Broughton, Bishop and Missionary
William Grant Boughton (1788-1853) was the first Bishop of Australia. He was born in Westminster, England and educated at The King's School, Canterbury and Pembroke College, Cambridge. He was ordained as a priest in 1823 and was noticed by the Duke of Wellington who arranged for him to be the Archdeacon of Sydney in Australia.
He arrived in Sydney in 1829. In 1834, Australia became its own diocese and Broughton was consecrated Bishop in 1846. He was instrumental in the development of the Anglican Church in Ausralia.
Let us remember Bp. William Grant Broughton in our prayers today:
Almighty and everlasting God, we thank you for your servant Bp. William Grant Broughton, whom you called to preach the Gospel to the people of Australia; raise up in this and every land evangelists and heralds of your kingdom, that your Church may proclaim the unsearchable riches of our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
