Saint Days: Thomas Ken, Bishop
Thomas Ken (1637-1711) was born in Hertfordshire in England. He attended Winchester College, Hartford Hall at Oxford, and New College. He was ordained in 1662 and served as a curate. Then, in 1672, he was appointed as the Bishop's chaplain. He was a composer of hymns, some of his well known ones are "Awake, my soul and with the sun" and "Glory to Thee, my God, this night."
In 1679, Ken was appointed chaplain to princess Mary by Charles II. In 1684, he was made Bishop of Bath and Wells.
Let us remember, Bp, Thomas Ken in our prayers today:
O God, our heavenly Father, who raised up your faithful servant Thomas Ken., to be a bishop and pastor in your Church and to feed your flock: Give abundantly to all pastors the gifts of your Holy Spirit, that they may minister in your household as true servants of Christ and stewards of your divine mysteries; through Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
