Saint Days: John Chyrsostom, Bishop and Teacher of the Faith
St. John Chrysostom is considered one of the most influential Church Fathers. He lived from 349-407. He was born in Antioch to a pagan family but was baptized as a young adult after being raised in a pagan home. He studied theology and dedicated himself to asceticism. He was ordained a deacon in 381 and a priest in 386. He quickly became know for his eloquent preaching and was made the Archbishop of Constantinople in 397. He was instrumental in reforms in the church and his preaching gave him immense influence. We have lots of his writings today so he still influences theologians and Christian thinkers!
Let us remember St. Chrysostom in our prayers today:
Almighty God, you gave to your servant John Chrysostom special gifts of grace to understand and teach the truth as it is in Christ Jesus: Grant that by this teaching we may know you, the one true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
